The workflow

From a standard to a student’s proof.

ResponseLab is an instructional coaching platform. Teachers keep every decision; students do the reading, thinking, evidence selection, and writing.

1. Enter

Enter your TEKS or learning standard, grade level, subject, and topic.

2. Create

Generate an original reading passage or provide your own text.

3. Challenge

Generate a rigorous constructed-response question aligned to the passage.

4. Annotate

Students read the passage, highlight lines, and attach their own notes.

5. Respond

Students build a RACES response with an optional on-screen coach.

6. Prove

Students select the exact evidence and explain why it supports their answer.

7. Improve

Actionable feedback identifies the weakest component and the next step.

The reading surface

Try the annotation tools.

This is the same reader students use. Marks are private to each student and save automatically as they read.

Why evidence has to be checkable

18px
MarkerSelect text in the passage to mark it.

A constructed response is not a guess dressed up in complete sentences. It is a small argument, and like every argument it can be checked. The reader should be able to trace each claim back to a line in the text.

That is why ResponseLab asks students to mark the passage before they write. Highlighting is not decoration; it is the first draft of the evidence. When a student later selects a quotation, the platform compares it against the passage itself, so a sentence that was never written cannot be cited.

Try it here. Select any phrase above or below, choose highlight, underline, or note, and watch it appear in the panel beside the passage.

The framework

Restate. Answer. Cite. Explain. Summarize.

R

Restate the Question

Turn the prompt into a statement so the first sentence stands on its own.

A

Answer the Question

Give a clear, direct answer that addresses all parts of the prompt.

C

Cite the Evidence

Provide specific evidence, quotes, or details from the text.

E

Explain Your Thinking

Explain how the cited evidence supports the answer or claim.

S

Summarize

Close with a sentence that reinforces the main idea.

RACES support is configurable per assignment: full support, guided, or independent.
